The Reality Machine pairs a storytelling AI with a deterministic, rules-true combat engine. The AI narrates your world. The engine rolls the dice, tracks the hit points, and enforces the rules — every time, for every class.
We love AI-narrated adventures, and we love real tabletop rules — and no app gave us both. Pure-AI dungeon masters write beautiful scenes, then roll a 47 on a d20, forget your hit points, and hand-wave your subclass out of existence. Rules-first virtual tabletops track everything, but there's no living world inside them. Language models are storytellers, not accountants — so we stopped asking one system to be both.
The Reality Machine splits the job. The AI narrates, roleplays every NPC, and weaves your choices into a long-running campaign. The moment initiative is rolled, a deterministic engine takes over: it rolls every save, applies every resistance, tracks every condition, and shows you the math. When the fight ends, the AI turns the battle log back into story. Best of both worlds — not a compromise between them.
Full tabletop combat — advantage and disadvantage, automatic saving throws with proficiency, damage typing, conditions, concentration, reactions, death saves — resolved deterministically and rolled seamlessly into the AI's narration. The dice math prints in the log. Nothing is hallucinated; nothing is fudged.
Play alone or bring your party from anywhere. Campaigns run across sessions and story arcs with persistent characters, XP, loot, and world state — and everything your table says and does is woven into the storyline as canon.
Your table talks directly to itself. Invites and chat are end-to-end encrypted, friending is locked to write-once keys, and in-character and IRL chat run as separate feeds so the story stays clean. Your campaign lives on your machines, not ours.
The AI DM runs on your own Claude API key: no subscription, no credit packs, no markup. Dial model and verbosity to fit your budget, watch the live session-cost meter, and take turns funding sessions — only one player per session needs a key.
Not a sales pitch — this is the checklist we built from as players. Judge for yourself.
| What we wanted at the table | Typical AI DM apps | The Reality Machine |
|---|---|---|
| Dice that are actually random, math you can check | The model "rolls" — and sometimes invents results or forgets modifiers | Engine-rolled, seeded, printed with the full breakdown |
| Combat that follows the rules of the game | Narrative-only combat, or combat switched off entirely | Deterministic turn-based combat for all 12 classes, every subclass |
| Your class features actually working | Features are flavor text the model may or may not remember | Rage, Metamagic, Wild Shape, Portent, maneuvers, invocations — mechanically real |
| Multiplayer without a middleman | Company servers hold your campaign and your chats | Peer-to-peer, end-to-end encrypted, campaign data stays local |
| Honest pricing | $10–40/month subscriptions plus credit packs on top | Free app + your own API key at raw cost, with a live meter |
